HERDSMANSHIP COMPETITION

 

Judging for the Herdsmanship Award will be done throughout the show and will be done for cattle, market hogs, sheep and goats. Winners will be selected in each species. Families will be considered as a single exhibitor and not separated.

CRITERIA FOR HERDSMANSHIP AWARD

75% 1. Cleanliness of Stall Area

            a. Absence of trash in and around stall area at all times.

            b. Bedding in stalls clean and fresh at all times.

15% 2. Neatness of Stall Area

            a. Equipment and feed neatly arranged.

            b. Equipment not in use to be stored appropriately.

            c. Equipment not to block traffic areas.

10% 3. Individual Signs or Exhibits

HERDSMANSHIP AWARD Cash Awards: $25.00 - By species RECORD BOOK COMPETITION Exhibitors are required to submit one completed Project Record Book for judging as part of the total education experience. Important: Show premiums will be withheld if no record is turned in by the exhibitor. Exhibitors are required to submit at least one book but are encouraged to submit books for each specie entered in the fair. Books will be judged as Junior (ages 9-11 as of September 30, 2008), Intermediate (ages 12-13 as of September 30, 2008), and Senior (ages 14 and older as of September 30, 2008). Books will be separated by species and judged against the criteria listed below. Exhibitors are reminded that this is a project record book and not a scrap book. Exhibitors are encouraged to limit the number of extra pages added to the record book to two (2). Pictures of the exhibitor and project animal are acceptable. Completed books are to be submitted to the Rockbridge County Extension Office no later than 4:30 p.m. on Friday, August 8, 2008. Late books will not be eligible for awards. If the record book is found to be incomplete, no premium will be awarded.

CARCASS SHOWS CLASSES:

RULES:

1. Only animals entered in the market animal shows are eligible.

2. Entry fees are as follows: Steers - $10.00/entry, lambs hogs and goats $8.00/entry.

3. See general rule #17 for entry deadline information.

4. Carcass ultrasound data will be collected at weigh-in on July 15, 2008 by a CUP - certified ultrasound technician, and will be

    submitted to the Centralization Ultrasound Processing Lab in Iowa for tabulation.

5. Entries will be ranked according to carcass merit and cash awards will be distributed to the top 10 placings in each species.

6. Premiums will be paid according to the sliding scale for carcass show awards.

7. First place winners in each class will also receive an award.
